POST-CONFERENCE TOUR (Friday July 15th, 2011) _____________ 105 BRL / person:

Corcovado Mountain and Tijuca Forest (half-day tour)

  • Corcovado is, together with Sugarloaf, a symbol of Rio de Janeiro. It soars 710 m above sea level, abruptly from Jardim Botânico, Humaitá and Botafogo districts. Its top is crowned by the huge statue of Christ-the-Redeemer (38 meters high, weighting 1145 tons). It can be reached by a small train or by car from the opposite face (or by climbing it...!).
  • Tijuca Forest is the largest urban forest in the world, protected as a national park.

The tour will start at 09:00 (pick-up by panoramic open jeep(s) at the hotel); we will go to Corcovado with a stop at Dona Marta belvedere (at the top of Dona Marta Mountain); after Corcovado we will go to Tijuca Forest national park through “Vista Chinesa” road, which winds its way through the forest itself. Arriving at the park, we will admire a cascade and enjoy a light 30-minute hike to plunge into the Forest ambiance. Return by “Canoas” road, to admire Pedra da Gávea (842 meters) and views of São Conrado beach, where hang-gliders jumping from Pedra Bonita use to land. Arrival to the hotel around 13:30.

Refreshments and light snacks will be available at the jeeps (water, juice, soft drinks, typical “polvilho” biscuits and cereal bars).

The afternoon is free for enjoying the beach, or resting, or shopping...

Weather may be fresh in the forest, so take a light coat with you, preferably with protection against wind.

The photos below show:

  • Corcovado amidst the clouds. The mountains in the background lie inside Tijuca Forest National Park. The highest peak is more than 1000 meters high. The flat-topped mountain at the extreme left, above the clouds, is Pedra da Gávea, which we will pass by when returning from the Forest.
  • Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon (close to the hotels) seen from Corcovado.
  • Vista Chinesa (“Chinese View”) belvedere, in our way to the Forest.
  • The flora on the way to the Forest.
  • Taunay Cascade.
  • A path inside the Forest.
  • Coatis (small mammals), which we may see if we are lucky.
