The Graduate Program of the Industrial Engineering Department – DEI – of the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro, PUC-Rio, is offering a Professional Master Degree in Logistics, envisaging to form professional capable to analyze, elaborate new techniques, and solve questions referring to logistics systems.

Known globally as a competitiveness factor in companies, Logistics has shown a large expansion during last years. Be it due to the necessity to attend efficiently the internal market, or to be capable to compete in the international market, the Brazilian companies have been looking for the development of their Logistics sectors, generating a search of professionals in this area. The increasing demand for qualified professionals in Logistics contrasts with an evident offer shortage. There exists the necessity of a fast formation of technicians with a higher technical and methodological background in the “Stricto-Sensu” graduate level. The proper formation level for this demand is the Master Degree, with a good methodological basis, which shall allow the student to  developed itself during the course of practical applications and initiate a continued formation in an autodidact or formal manner. This is the case of the Professionalizing our Professional Master Degree, conceived by the Higher School Improvement Coordination – CAPES. It is important to emphasize that the most important objective is not to form a professor, or a researcher, who eventually shall make a Doctorate, but a professional with competence to act in the productive environment. The Professional Master Degree characteristic is to provide the students with a theoretical and methodological instrumental that shall capacitate them to develop analyses and complex studies for the solution of real world problems, using fully scientific methods and production engineering advanced techniques. However, it should be emphasized that as it is a “Stricto-Sensu” Master Degree, it guarantees better access conditions to a PhD course.

A traditional characteristic of the DEI programs is the emphasis in quantitative methods, associated to some conceptual disciplines. The proposed program tries to ensure the main emphasis characteristic in quantitative methods, giving the student the instruments for the conception and dimensioning of the logistics systems, allowing the treatment of large information masses and the efficient use of information technologies besides the logistics system cost evaluation capacity.

According to CAPES (Ordinance 080 of December 16th 1998), the professionalizing Master Degree has a very specific curricular structure “articulating the study with the professional application”. The final work, which shall demand an absolute title of the study object, might also be used “under the dissertation, project, case analysis,…”. CAPES also emphasizes that the professionalizing master degree courses have the self financing propensity, what means that the course should be paid. The Master Degree was homologated by MEC (Ministry of Education and Culture) according to opinion 353/2001 issued by the Superior Education Chamber of the National  Education Council.

In August of 2010 a knew class of the Professional Master Degree in Logistics was created exclusively for Petrobras.

COURSE DURATION

The approximate course duration is of 24 months, divided in two stages. During the first stage, the student should complete the course disciplines, in a total of 360 hours (24 credits). This stage should be fulfilled in 18 months, assuming a workload of 8 hours per week. The final stage shall be dedicated to the course conclusion project elaboration, with an applied character and with a foreseen duration of 9 working months with the same workload of 8 hours per week. This stage might be reduced if the student dedicates himself more intensively to the project, or if he starts it together with the last course period.

TARGET AUDIENCE

The course is directed to engineers, economists, administrators and other high level students that work with logistics systems of manufacturing and service rendering companies. The professional experience of the candidates shall be valued in the selection process, with the objective to turn the course into a propitious environment for the experience exchange and student interaction. At most shall be admitted 25 students per year, envisaging to keep the candidate selection level high, as well as to propitiate a proper and individualized orientation for the course conclusion project.

REGULATIONS

The course shall have 24 credits at least and a final project. The achieved title is called Master Degree in Logistics. It is applied for discipline evaluation, conclusion deadlines and all other aspects of PUC-RIO’s graduate program regulation, and the valid complementary provisions for the graduate programs. According to PUC-RIO’s stricto-sensu graduate programs, a test shall be required to evaluate the foreign language proficiency (English or French).

The student of the professional master degree course may apply for the traditional (Academic) Masters Degree, or for the Doctorate degree. Upon request and approval, the fullfilled credits from the professionalizing course count as valid credits for the new course, according to the current rules of PUC-Rio’s graduate programs. In this case the student should pass through the selection process of the respective courses. For the Doctorate program, depending on the chosen concentration area, the masters degree in logistics may cover a maximum of 24 credits of the total of 43 credits to be fulfilled.

Program

The list of the disciplines for the Professionalizing Master Degree in Logistics is shown under the table below. More information on the disciplines are available under the item “Disciplines” in this homepage. Each credit amounts to 15 hours of lessons per semester, i.e. one lesson per week during 4 months.

SELECTION PROCESS

The selection of candidates for the professionalizing master degree shall be realized in the manner prescribed for the traditional master degree, i.e. based on the School Records, Curriculum Vitae and presentation letters. Eventually an interview with some candidates might be requested to clarify some doubts. The DEI graduate Commission shall be responsible to perform the selection process. Information of the selection process are found under the section “inscriptions”.
