The Industrial Engineering Department of PUC-Rio offers the Undergraduate Course in Production Engineering.

The Production Engineering of PUC-Rio attends the students that wish to achieve a deeper formation of the production engineering management and analysis methods, associated to a main training in traditional engineering. The student receives a general background in science and technology, with disciplines linked to production processes, especially mechanical, metallurgical and chemical. Thus, it is indicated for a student that wishes a stronger training in the financial area, or in transport and logistic, or even a more generic formation to act in any productive sector, be it industrial commercial, services or financial.

As in any engineering of PUC-Rio, the Production Engineering habilitation starts with a Basic Cycle, where the student receives an ample scientific training in the mathematic, physics, chemistry and informatics area, with intense laboratorial practice, experience in engineering projects and humanistic formation. In the following, the student realizes disciplines linked to mechanical, metallurgical, chemical and electrical production processes. This is followed by the Production Engineering Professional Cycle, which has a series of obligatory and optional disciplines.

The Professional Cycle is structured so as to prepare the students for the Production Engineer professional practice. This requires an appropriate grounding in the engineering, human and social science methods. To form this Production Engineer, the Professional Cycle is supported by two axles. The first one envisages to provide the professional with a solid scientific formation in mathematics and basic statistics, added by the technological base of the Production Engineering pertinent to the production processes.  The second axle is structured so as to familiarize the student with the project and management of productive systems; it refers to the specific disciplines covered by the Production Engineering. As the course objective is to form an Production Engineer with a large operational amplitude, this extensive discipline set covers aspects such as the management of processes and materials, the project of productive systems, the quality management, the company finances, the marketing, logistic and working conditions. Thus, we are not only engaged to supply the vision necessary to enable the Production Engineer to be capable to understand, interact and act in the several company sectors, but also to render him the capacity to act in companies of several natures.

The optative disciplines are divided in accordance with the concentration area, thus enabling the student to opt for a deeper formation in one of the following areas: Finances and Investment Analysis, Production Management, Transport and Logistic. The student should also participate of free elective disciplines to complete his interdisciplinary formation, and of complementary activities that remain under the responsibility of the Engineering Professional Cycle Coordination (CCPE), which allow the future professional to deepen his training in the production aspects that awake his interests.

The present course curriculum envisages to attend the recent globalization tendencies, as well as the quality and productivity valorization of goods and services, trying to render a training to students that is compatible with this new national and international market picture. The students are stimulated to utilize intensively computers and modern methods for the analysis and decision making in the most diverse productive systems.
